A weaver who's part of an indigenous Mayan collective preserves ancient Mayan symbols through her weaving in a village near Antigua Guatemala in Guatemala

Guatemala

The chaos of Guatemala City, the country’s eponymous capital, subsides as you leave its boundaries, revealing a country still barely touched by international tourism. Volcanoes ring the photogenic city of Antigua, the former capital of Spanish colonial power in Central America, whose exquisite architecture has just about survived the years.

Beyond, indigenous villages preserve their Mayan culture through local tourism initiatives, with the gleaming waters of Lago Atitlan offering the perfect backdrop.
